This tip might not be what you hand in mind when you clicked on this blog post… BUT I can tell you that it has helped me stay focused and GET THINGS DONE!
For most of us – especially for myself – when I have a to-do list in front of me I tend to bounce around between the tasks. These might vary between emails, social media, blogging, editing, bookkeeping, etc. There are so many things on my mind all at once! And as much as I’d like to think that I’m a multi-tasker, the truth is that if I’m not focusing my attention on one task at a time, I’m probably not doing it well or fully!
My #1 Tip to Stay Focused in the Office
SOOOO … the tip that I’m about to share with you that has helped me get tasks done faster, and thoroughly, would be setting a timer!
YES! You read that right! If I want to get through all of my emails, I’ll set a timer for 30 minutes and then put my phone away.
Knowing that I only have 30 minutes to complete the task in front of me allows me to be more focused.
Guess what? Most of the time, I am able to get through all my emails, for example, within the 30 minute timeframe! If there was an email that took a little longer for me to answer, then I’ll add 10 more minutes to the timer, but then I’m all done!
If I were hopping back and forth between a variety of tasks, it would have been so easy to stretch a 30 minute task to 2-3 hours! AMAZING!
Setting a Timer Works!
Every time I set a timer, there is something that happens in my mind that makes me think I’m running a race or that I have a little bit of competition going on inside my head. Is that weird to say? HAHA
The truth is I want to beat the clock! I am more determined to get the task done before the buzzer goes off!
This has helped me tremendously! As you implement this tip into completely your everyday tasks, you’ll become more aware of how long it actually takes you to finish certain tasks in your business.
It’s easier to stretch out a task than to stay focused on one task at a time. There is actually a statistic out that says humans now have a shorter attention span than a goldfish! YIKES! Even more of a reason to set focused time to complete tasks well!
