How I Became a Wedding Photographer

At one of my recent engagement sessions, one of my couples asked me how I became a wedding photographer, and I thought that was such a great question! Usually, the question is “how long have a been a wedding photographer?” Please, know that I agree that’s a completely valid question to ask your wedding photographer when booking your wedding vendors! I was just taken back by the first question and excited to answer!!! I hadn’t been asked that question in a looonngg time! It was so cool being able to share with my couple how my business began. So, I thought I would share it with you all, too!

How it began…

Growing up, I was usually the one who took photos of anything that was happening! From family trips to the beach or youth group retreats, you could count on me to bring my point and shoot to capture it all! No one asked me to take photos, I just loved documenting everything and then scrap booking all the photos that I picked up at the Walmart photo lab afterwards! I’m still amazed at how digital and streamlined my photography process is now.

Fast forward years later to when Herbert and I got married. He gifted me my first Nikon D40 as a wedding gift! It was my first DSLR EVER! He knew how much I loved taking photos, and I couldn’t believe I had a fancy camera to play with! Obviously, I started taking photos of everything in sight! Holding a DSLR compared to a point and shoot felt so different, but full of excitement! I had a bunch to learn, and I couldn’t wait to get started!

I still have the DSLR Herbert gave me as a wedding gift, too – even though I never use it! About two years after our wedding day, it actually broke! YIKES! I’m not sure what happened, but I still keep it as a reminder of where it all started.

As the years went on, my desire to grow and learn as much about wedding photography never stopped! If you were to ask Herbert what it was like watching me run after photography with such excitement and passion, he’d probably tell you that it was neat for him to see how I never stopped pursuing something I loved so much. He is my number one fan and I love him so much!!

Here we are almost six years later and I’m a wedding photographer! If I’m being honest, I had no idea that this was what the Lord had in mind for me, but I’m so grateful that He instilled a passion of photography in me!
